A brief history of Jaguar

Jaguar is a British luxury car brand owned by Jaguar Land Rover, a subsidiary of Tata Motors. The company's headquarters is in Whitley, Coventry, although the cars are made in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham.

Jaguar was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company in Blackpool, Lancashire in 1922. It was originally intended to produce sidecars and trailers for motorcycles produced by its sister company, Swallow Coachbuilding Co., which had been founded in 1911. One year later the company moved to Coventry and used the name SS Cars Limited for their cars. In 1935 the company name was changed to Jaguar Cars Limited and has been known simply as Jaguar since 1961.

Jaguar was bought from British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC) by the Ford Motor Company in 1989; Ford divested itself of Jaguar in 2008 at which point it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Motors Limited before being purchased by Indian conglomerate Tata Group on 1 August 2008.

The first cars carrying the Jaguar badge were manufactured in October 1936 and were designated model SS 90 like many other sports cars of the time with a "90" denoting 90hp engine capacity per cylinder.
